His background is in accounting, law and banking.  In the early 1980s, David worked in Audit for Deloitte Haskins & Sells (now Deloittes). David completed articles at Arthur Robinson & Hedderwicks (now Linklaters Allens) in 1990. He then moved to New York in 1994 and worked for the New York law firm of Kaye Scholer Fierman Hays & Handler (now Arnold & Porter Kaye Scholer) where he specialised in securitisation law.

Moving back to Australia in 1997, he joined ANZ Investment Bank in the fledgling securitisation section. David has had much experience in the securitisation market.

In 2007, David left ANZ to form Cygnus Advisory to pursue new business ideas.

In 2014, David joined the National Australia Bank where he worked until 2020 as the Head of Portfolio, Analytics and Execution and the Head of FIG, Banks & Non-Banks.

He is now an Executive Director at Firstrata Finance.
